Don’t Put Your Life on Pause to Learn English

  • August 8, 2023

"Bring English into your life."

When Damia Mendoza was 17 years old and living in Ecuador where she was born and raised, she decided she wanted to go to the States to learn English. But there was one problem standing in her way… English was one of her LEAST favorite subjects!

She did fairly well in school but she spent most of her energy playing tennis, rather than hunkering down and taking the time needed to learn the language. That being said, Damia knew that English would be a valuable tool to have in her toolbelt, so—looking for adventure—she moved to New York, finished high school in the United States, and faced her personal beast (English) head-on.

However, as she got started, she quickly remembered that studying grammar rules in a classroom didn’t work for her. It didn’t work for her then, and—even though she was serious about making progress—it didn’t work for her now, either.

But she didn't give up. She knew her learning style, and she used that to find a better way.

Through taking classes that interested her, getting involved in extracurriculars, and forcing herself to make friends who didn’t speak Spanish (her first language), Damia paved her own path to English fluency.

In this video, Damia shares endless nuggets of wisdom when it comes to language learning and how she approached it differently. I promise you, this is a video you do not want to miss.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to bring English into your life, instead of putting your life on hold to learn English
  • How to learn English without studying grammar
  • How understanding your first language can help you learn your second
  • How to force yourself to speak in public (in a good way)
  • The mindset to have when approaching haters
  • Why you don’t want to get rid of your accent
  • How understanding your learning style can help you determine the best way for you to learn English
